Phimosis is also known as a tightened foreskin, is when the foreskin cannot be pulled back or retracted from the tip of the penis, called the glans. This condition is common in uncircumcised som adults , toddlers and baby boys.
Typically, most baby boys outgrow any problems with phimosis by the age of 3. The foreskin should begins to naturally separate around age 2. While, it takes longer for some boys.
Sign and symptoms of phimosis:
- Redness or discoloration
- Swelling (inflammation)
- Soreness.
- Pain while urinating
- Pain with erection
- Itchiness
- Odor
- Painful intercourse
- Lack of sensation
Causes pf phimosis
Phimosis only affects uncircumcised males. Infants and Baby boys can develop the condition during natural development.
Other potential phimosis causes are:
- Urinary tract infections.
- Foreskin injury or trauma.
- Infection of the foreskin.
- Forcing the foreskin to retract.
Treatment:
Treatment of phimosis depends on the sign and symptoms. Physiological phimosis does not require any treatment or medications and gets better on its own. While, pathological phimosis does not go away on its own and need medical treatment. In some cases, the doctor will suggest cleaning the penial region regularly with lukewarm water and drying it gently. Apart from this, the doctors might recommend treatments such as medications and circumcision surgery.
